HEYYYY all!!

Excited to share some tips and a little bit about our experience with custom home building.

We build our first home together when we were engaged and moved in the week we got married (not recommended lol). With that experience we had no idea what we were doing, we only got to pick out a few things and I ended up hating how the outside of our house looked. HATED it. We also had the craziest yard and in the two years of living there we never fully got it finished because we needed so many retaining walls!!

After we sold our house we told ourselves we would never build again until we were able to build exactly what we wanted. 3 years later and here we are!!! I'm so so excited that we are finally getting our dream home!! It has been a learning experience!!

The best thing we have done is gotten a design team!! We know what we like, but we don't know how to put it together!! The options are endless when you are custom building and it can be VERY overwhelming!! Our design team has taken our style, ideas, Houzz account (it's like Pinterest but for house stuff) and they have pretty much done all the work.

When you go to a showroom you could be there for HOURS picking out colors, materials, patterns etc... but our design team picked it out for us and we said yes, or no! That alone has made everything SO. MUCH. EASIER. It is absolutely worth every penny!!

I am a very very visual person so as things are going up in the house, there are a few things I wish I could have changed. And I still plan on looking into changing them ;).

Finding a good builder is huge. Shop around and see who you vibe with! With custom builders I feel like they care more about the relationship because they aren't just throwing up homes left and right and trying to mass create. Our builders have been SO involved with every step of the way, they work with our designers to make sure everything is perfect, and they keep us updated!! That is HUGE!!

Last but not least, landscaping. A lot of areas with HOA's will require your yard to be done in a certain time frame so factor that in!! We had such a pain with our first yard and I said, NEVER AGAIN.. and then... it happened again. Ugh. Our yard is crazy and we had to factor that in, but you can't pass up the views we are going to have and that is why we went for it. As long as you know what you are getting into!!

Whatever you do, do what YOU want. Don't let anyone talk you out of what you want!!

XO
