Happy Thursday!!!

Isn't this funny that it's even a topic of discussion we have to have?! TROLLS!!! What are they? Well.. trolls are bored people, possibly unhappy with something in their life so they troll around and leave mean comments on other people's social media with the intention of trying to create conflict.

Whether you have followers, or really have any type of social media accounts, there is going to be a great chance you will run into a troll, or two. ;) With the world we live in you’ll inevitably have some trolls wander over to your posts and leave insensitive or straight up rude comments. It’s an unfortunate risk you have to take being involved in social media or while building your social following. How do you deal with trolls? Read the tips below and you’ll be a pro troll-tamer in no time.

First... deep breaths.

Don’t respond while you’re upset-- take a few minutes to cool off when the trolls leave comments. Do whatever you gotta do to ensure that you aren’t responding defensively. I have always been one to jump to defensive, but I have gotten really good at learning to breath and just laugh it off. When these trolls intentionally cause issues, they want a reaction. Don't give it to them!

Don’t delete their comments.

It may be tempting to silence the trolls by deleting their comments, but this can exacerbate their behavior. They’ll come back for more, and then criticize you for censoring them. Exceptions to this rule may be made if the troll starts to get vulgar or threatening-- in this case, you may want to delete comments and report the troll.

Respond with a little humor.

If you have a quirky response, roll with it! It can be fun to troll the trollers back, just don’t be hateful (we don’t want to stoop to their level). My method of choice is to respond with something completely random to just confuse them. It’s hysterical.

Respond with reason.

If the troll is spewing lies, simply correct them with the facts. No need to make any further digs, just clear up what is true and what is not. If it is something important to you or something that could harm you or your own brand, clear it up.

Don’t feed the trolls.

Sometimes (almost always) the best thing to do is to just ignore the trolls. Often they’re trying to get a response from you. They want to ruffle your feathers, and even if you can respond rationally at first, with every response you’re giving them another chance to say something that will push you over the edge.

Keep an eye on how your community responds.

We see this all the time-- a troll comes knocking and friends and family or followers show up to defend. Sometimes it’s nice to just ignore the troll and allow your community to defend you, but sometimes your followers aren’t skilled in the art of troll taming, and could just make it worse. YIKES! If you see this happening, shut it down. Thank your tribe for their kind words and then try to end the chaos!!

There have been times that the troll commenting has helped me. The commenting boosted my post and ended up getting more engagement. In this circumstance I say, thank you troll!! ;)

Mute comments.

On occasion you might want to turn the comments section off for your posts altogether. You can do this in some places on Facebook and on IG! You can also hide inappropriate comments or simply delete them.

As a last resort: block the troll.

If the troll is relentless, block them.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And in all reality, it might be good to just block them anyways. You don't need negative and rude people around you anyways right?!

Lastly, contextualize the occurrence.

Don’t let this ruin your day. Remember that this is just one person-- a person who doesn’t even really know you! So don’t take it personally. If anything, pat yourself on the shoulder for having made it to the point where you even have haters. You know you made it when someone goes out of their way to be rude to you!!!

None of this is rocket science, but hopefully it helps when you are in the situation. Ultimately, the people you want in your life are those that uplift you and bring the positive vibes!!

Have a great weekend!! It's almost Thanksgiving time!!! Ahhh!!!
